NEWSLETTER - November '10
(issue 3)
Welcome to the Royal Canin PET
EXPO newsletter. We’ve now held PET EXPO in Hamilton (as well
as Christchurch in 2009), and even after a 9 year gap since our
last time there, we attracted huge crowds on both days. This
once again proves to us that PEOPLE LOVE ANIMALS
! It doesn’t seem to matter if
you’re young or old, male or female – animals seem to appeal to
everyone.
PET EXPO was held at the brand new ClaudelandsEvents Centre, which turned out to be the most perfect venue for an indoor show. We have many people to thank, for helping make it a wonderful experience for everyone. Here they are in alphabetical order… C - Cats.
The Exhibition of Cats,
organised by the Mid Island Shorthair Cat Club was an
outstanding success. We really appreciated all the hard work by
Bronwyn Main and her team, that went into co-ordinating all the
different breeds. The public loved seeing so many varieties and
also really enjoyed the one-on-one opportunity of talking with
the owners about their cats.
They also loved being able to
stroke and pat the animals.
The talks on the cat stage were also co-ordinated by the Mid Island club and we were very impressed by all the knowledgeable speakers who covered a wide variety of feline topics. We have always hoped that PET EXPO would serve two purposes – to entertain the public and also to educate them. The talks and presentations on the various cat/dog stages certainly contributed towards this, as well as the interaction with the animal owners. Many thanks also to the individual cat breeders and clubs, that participated in the show. It was a fantastic effort by everyone and enhanced the feline experience for all the visitors. C – Commercial Sites
PET EXPO would not be complete
without all the products needed to care for your pets, so we had
a wide range of pet accessories and pet foods for sale at the
show. We were pleased to have attracted trade exhibitors from
all over New Zealand, as well as four from Australia and one
from Canada.
As always, the standard of their displays was very high and impressed the public and organisers alike.
D – Dogs
PET EXPO was very fortunate to have
the support of the Hamilton Kennel Club and the Huntly &
District Kennel Club. They combined their two events to produce
4 open shows over the two days of PET EXPO. It was an excellent
public relations exercise for the clubs, and the public were
totally wowed by the impressive range of dogs they saw. There
were over 200 dogs and every variety imaginable, from the tall
and elegant Wolf Hounds and Great Danes to the tiny, cute and
cuddly West Highland White Terriers.
We also had a good number of breeders and dog clubs with their own sites, and were very pleased to see that so many sites had dogs on them. D – Dog Stage
The dog stage was a very busy place
with a full timetable of dog-related talks and
activities, interspersed with magic shows that made the young
and old clap and cheer. Many thanks to Bill and Mandy Reid, and
the young assistant (son) Liam.
And then there were dog massage
demos and dog grooming displays, plus weight pulls by the
Northern Alaskan Malamute Club and carting displays, by the
Bernese Mountain Dog Club. Phew, it was exhausting just keeping
up with everything!
When Chelsea Marriner and her performing “Dogstars” team of Border Collies took to the stage, there was standing room only in the audience. It’s amazing how someone so young can be so talented. F - Farmyard Animals
Another highlight of PET EXPO were
the farmyard animals. We had everything from baby goats, piglets
and bunnies through to highland cattle, llamas and miniature
donkeys. One of the goats was particularly vocal and kept
everyone entertained, especially our poor overnight staff!
O – Other Animals
A big thanks to Dave Dalziel and the
members of the Waikato Aquarium Society. They created a darkened
grotto, which showed off their lit-up fish tanks to perfection.
They also ran a number of competitions on their site, which the
children loved. Many thanks. It was a great effort.
We were also very pleased to have the NZ Finch Breeders Association exhibiting at PET EXPO. For 2011 we have made sure that we don’t clash with the national bird show, like we did this year!
Here are a couple of emails we
received after the show from some very happy exhibitors.
Lorayne Tennet:
Thankyou for all the hard work. We did enjoy it
and Percy (the Sealyham Terrier) wants you to know that he
kissed at least 1000 children, maybe more, over the weekend.
Gillian Dray:
I would like to express my thanks to the Mid Island Shorthair
Cat Club for hosting the Exhibition of Cats. It was a great way
for us breeders to show off our cats to a huge audience. It was
certainly a big hit with the public who attended.
It was a great show and everyone
deserves a pat on the back!
For 2011, we have decided to hold 3
Pet Expos, in Christchurch, Hamilton and Wellington. The naming
rights sponsor is once again Royal Canin. They did a wonderful
job for previous two PET EXPOS, so we are delighted to have
their support once again.
We are delighted that Pet Expo has
been such a huge hit with the public and hope that you can join
us in 2011 and be part of this highly successful pet industry
event.
If you have any questions, suggestions, ideas or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Well that’s it for another year.
We’re taking our usual summer break over Christmas and will
close up on Friday 17th December, re-opening Monday 24th
January. Over the break we will still be coming in to the
office to clear our emails, messages, faxes and post office box,
so please feel free to contact us during this time.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year from us all at Dunkleys Shows Ltd – Fiona Dunkley and Kim Dunkley, Deb Balloch, Tania McLachlan, Craig Wilson and Colleen Roil.
